Why a hot cup leaks and a cold cup sweats
A paper cup that leaks and a paper cup that sweats are usually the same mistake: a cup being used for the temperature it was not built for. The two constructions are genuinely different.
What the lining does
Paper on its own dissolves. Every disposable cup that holds liquid has a thin barrier layer on the inside — polyethylene traditionally, PLA or PHA on plant-based cups.
That layer is doing two jobs: keeping liquid off the paper, and providing the surface that seals when the cup is formed. The seam and the base are heat-sealed through the lining, so the lining is structural as well as protective.
This is why a cup that has been squeezed hard can leak afterwards. Creasing the wall cracks the lining, and once cracked it stops being a barrier at that point.
Hot cups
A hot cup has a rolled rim to hold a lid, a lining rated for hot liquid, and usually a slightly thicker wall.
Where hot cups fail:
- The rolled rim. If the rim has been crushed in storage, the lid will not seat and it leaks at the lid. This is the most common failure and it happens in the stockroom, not at the counter.
- The base seam. Overfilling and then walking with it drives liquid against the base seam. Fill to the line.
- Softening. A single-wall cup that has held something very hot for a long time goes soft and loses rigidity. Double wall handles it better.
Cold cups
A cold cup has a straighter profile, a different rim for a cold lid, and no requirement for heat resistance. It does have a requirement hot cups do not: coping with condensation.
A cold drink cools the cup wall below the dew point of the surrounding air, and moisture condenses on the outside. That is not the cup leaking. It is the air.
The consequence is real though: water runs down the outside, softens the base where it collects, and the base can eventually fail. A cold cup is built for that; a hot cup used for a cold drink is not.
Why the lids do not swap
Hot lids are domed with a drinking aperture, sized to grip a rolled rim. Cold lids are flat or domed with a straw slot, and grip differently.
Ounces do not determine lid fit — rim diameter does. Two twelve ounce cups from different makers can have different rims. Where a listing gives a rim diameter, that is the number to match, and buying cups and lids from the same maker is the way to avoid the problem entirely.
The stockroom problems
Most cup complaints start before the cup is used.
Humidity softens the paper and the rim. A cup that has spent a month in a damp back room will not take a lid cleanly.
Crushing. A case with something heavy on top deforms every cup at the top of the stack. Store cases upright and do not stack other stock on them.
Open sleeves. Once a sleeve is opened, the stack collects dust. Take what you need and reclose it.
Sleeves and double wall
A single-wall cup with a hot drink is uncomfortable to hold, which is what sleeves are for. Double-wall cups have the air gap built in.
Two items versus one: a sleeve is another thing to stock, to store and to hand over. Where the price works out similar, double wall is the simpler operation.
Bowls
Paper bowls have the same construction and the same rules, with one addition: hot food puts oil on the lining as well as heat, and oil is harder on a barrier layer than water. A bowl rated for hot food says so.
Compostable cups in use
PLA-lined cups behave slightly differently in one respect: they soften at a lower temperature than polyethylene. For ordinary coffee this is not an issue. For anything at or near boiling, held for a long time, it can be.

Getting it right
Buy hot cups for hot drinks and cold cups for cold ones, buy lids and cups together, and store both dry, upright and unstacked. That covers essentially every cup problem a small site will meet.
